For the worse-Sam « Thread Started on Apr 25, 2007, 10:04pm »
Brian had left about an hour ago and now he was all alone at the farm. It was raining rather heavily and it was a cold rain. But he had to run out to the broodmare barn to make sure that Allegro was comfortable before returning back up to the home. He still couldn't believe all that Brian had done for him in the past few weeks. Such as taking him into his home, and doing everything within his power to make him comfortable when he'd been sick with the flu. Which was another reason why he wanted to get back into the house as quick as he could. He'd underestimated the rain and it was falling heavier than what he had expected. He was the only one on the farm at the moment besides the horses and Turbo, the Australian Shepherd who was currently safe and sound in the home. He had considered taking the dog with him but he had thought that he would be ok without him.
He didn't like strangers, or people who snuck up behind him. Since he'd been through way too much abuse in his lifetime before meeting Brian. He couldn't even stand a person raising their hand or voice. That was another reason why he wished that Brian was here, he always had been the person who would protect him. Now that protection was gone and he did feel vulnerable. A sharp pain ran up his right leg making him wince, the damp air was really getting to him. Sure he now had a brace on his right leg and had for about a week now but it could only do so much. The doctors wanted him to have surgery on his leg but he wasn't so sure about it and had told them that he didn't want to. Of course, it was days like this that made him seriously consider having it done. His leg was fragile, that was something that he knew for a fact. No doctor had been needed to tell him that it was rather unstable and almost anything could cause it to become re-injured again, perhaps even worse than it had been before.
The image of a person about five feet in front of him made him instantly freeze. Calvin James, the person who had basically abused him for three years was on the farm. There was nothing he could do, and there was no way he could get away. He watched in fear as he came toward him. His hands shook as Calvin kept getting closer and closer to him. Why did Brian have to leave so soon? "Now you'll get what you deserve." Calvin said in the harsh, drunk tone that Rocky had grown to fear. It was then that he felt Calvin kick his right leg, right where it hurt the most. He lost his balance and then hit the ground violently. The pain radiated through his whole body as he closed his eyes. There was nothing he could do now, except for wait for the kicking and other things to be done. He'd learned that six years ago, when he was just fifteen and being hurt by his foster parents. Still it was a shock to actually be kicked again since it hadn't happened since he had gotten away from Calvin. He wanted to get up and run away from the pain but he couldn't even move slightly without feeling pain.
He could feel the blows to his body, did he really deserve this? Calvin had let him go when he'd been sick with the flu and could hardly get around. It was then that he felt a kick land right near his ribs and he let out a gasp before receiving another well placed kick. A single tear ran down his face, but it could be mistaken for a raindrop. He'd learned not to cry while everything was happening but he just couldn't help it. The pain was too much this time and already he could feel bruises forming on his body. He knew something wasn't right with his leg now but he didn't know what it was. What had Calvin done to him? He felt the cold rain soak through his cloths, he was going to get sick. He knew that he'd probably end up getting sick pretty badly since he could tell that he had been out in the rain for awhile.
In what seemed like an eternity things ended and he felt Calvin give him one last kick near his hip before everything stopped. He heard Calvin swear at him before moving off. Now was his chance to try and get up but he couldn't even move. He tried to but the pain was too great and he could barley move in the first place. He shivered from the cold and from the fear or Calvin coming back. How long would he be out in the cold, scared and alone? He didn't think anybody was coming to the farm for awhile, another tear slid down his face before he closed his eyes. He didn't want to watch the rain fall.

Sam's truck drove though the rain. Her wind shear whippers working hard against the storm's rain fall that pounded on the window. She almost growled in annoyance at the thought that she may have missed the turn before her head lights hit a sign that lead into the stables. A small smile crept onto her lips before she turned her wheel to lead the truck's tires to the stables. She spotted a shape in front of the stables as she came to as stop near by. An animal must have gotten hit... she thought grimly. She turned off her engine before she unbuckled her seat belt. She looked at the form on the ground. A gasp escaped her. Battered and bruised a human laid on the ground. She stared for a few more moments before she slowly opened the door. She stepped out side, her brown eyed gaze fixed on him and umbrella forgotten. She's seen this boy before. Around the stables but never really spoke to him. Slowly she edged closer to him, trying to see if he was alive or dead. It was a grim thing to figure out but it wouldn't be any use to save an already dead man. She peered down to try to see his face. Her heart pounded and her breathe caught in her throat as she waited to see if the boy was alive or not. Rain drops rolled down her, what some may call beautiful, face. Rain made her shirt cling her her sides a bit.

He heard a truck pull up and he knew that it could just be Calvin coming back to hurt him some more. Yet the footsteps were not his, maybe whoever this person was would be able to help him. Or at least help him get somewhere out of the rain, he knew that Brian couldn't be more than an hour away and that would probably return once he heard the circumstances. Hopefully he would, since he was one of the few people that he really trusted. He slowly opened his eyes and very slowly looked up to see a girl, he couldn't remember her name. Of course, he knew that he was probably lucky enough that he could remember his name, let alone Brian's after what he'd just been through. He tried to find the energy to speak but it just wasn't there at the moment. Now that he saw the girl he wondered if she had seen what had went on with Calvin and him. A sudden fear struck him, could he still be around here somewhere. If one of the horses got hurt because of this he would never forgive himself. He was rather attached to Allegro, and Afleeting Story. Allegro was in foal and was due any day she could very well be foaling at that moment.
"Who, are you?" He asked slowly and quietly as he moved his arm slightly and winced. He wasn't used to any pain like this anymore and it had been a long time since Calvin had done something like this to him. The last time had been a few moments ago and he'd ended up staying home for a few days since he couldn't even get up would that happen this time? He knew that there was a good chance that he wouldn't be able to even sit up. He really needed help, but he wasn't so sure if he could trust this girl to help him. Of course he knew that she probably wouldn't hurt him on purpose. If only he could get up to the house, then things could go from there. He shivered and then felt another tear slide down his face. He'd learned not to cry in front of people but that was another thing that he just couldn't help. Besides, he wouldn't be punished for crying by her, or at least he hoped not.
Another thought then hit him, he'd seen this girl around the farm a few times and he didn't really know how much she'd be able to help him. She was about an inch shorter than he was and probably weighed about what he did. He didn't think he'd be able to get up on his own either, of course he could always try but he didn't think it would work out. He'd usually stayed about twenty feet away from the girl since he didn't really like strangers that much. Of course after this the girl probably wouldn't be a person he didn't know. That was, if she helped him he was praying that she did. There was no way he could stay out here for an hour until Brian got back. Of course he wouldn't come back if he didn't know what had happened and he really couldn't call him at this very moment and tell him. "You're not going to hurt me are you?" He timidly asked and wondered if she could even hear him since he was talking so quietly.

What kind of question is that? Sam questioned herself. Do I look like someone who could hurt someone?Yes, I came to kill you, Sam said bluntly with sarcasm ringing clear in it. I know it's not the time to play around but I can't help it! Sam screamed at her inner self that scolded me for saying that to, for all she knew, a dieing boy. Are you ok? Came Sam's standard question. Of course he's not ok! She thought to herself before she knelt down beside him. Do you think you can stand? Sam said trying to dismiss her previous question. Her tone held wariness and uncertainty, though a kind and friendly ring held in it. Her brown eyes glanced at his battered body. She wasn't sure. He looked like he couldn't sit up and could barely speak. Sam was sure she couldn't pick him up or anything. She had no upper body strength. Just leg strength really. Though it wasn't like she was going to get backed up into an alley or something. She never goes to the town or bars in the evening or night. She wouldn't go into the bar anytime of the day really though. Maybe there was someone that worked here that would help. She glanced around though the rain, trying to see if anyone was there that could help. The storm above started to pour heavier and make it dark. If it got any more darker I would be no help.

He watched as she knelt down beside him as he thought back to her sarcasm before. If she hadn't made it so clearly then he probably would have expected more pain and possibly would have moved away. His eyes were not on her though he was trying to look around and see if Calvin was still around. "No, not really." He said before moving his arm slightly again, he really didn't want to move anything else. Especially not his right leg at the moment since he could feel the pain coming from it. Yet he knew that sooner or later he would have to move and it probably would be more painful than being kicked in the first place. "Everything hurts, and I can try to get up but I don't know if I can." He said as he slowly began to try and life himself up before feeling a spasm of pain in his back and it was with that when he lowered himself back to the ground.
He watched as she looked around, apparently she didn't know that there was nobody else around. "Nobody else is here...Brian's gone for a few days." He said and then squeezed his eyes shut as the pain seemed to increase. "But he just left an hour ago so he couldn't have went too far." He said before swallowing hard as he thought of a plan. The broodmare barn wasn't that far off if he could get that far then things would be better. He began to slowly rise again before he felt something in his leg seem to give out but something was keeping him up. Sure he was only halfway above the ground but it was a start. Once again he wished that Brian hadn't left so soon of course if he hadn't than he wouldn't be out here in the first place and this wouldn't be happening. Of course, he knew that he had to leave but hopefully he would come back.
For some reason he had a flashback of the accident that had first caused so much damage to his body, especially his right side. The pony slipping on the ice, the shrill scream of it as it fell on the ground, crushing his right side. It was then that time seemed to stand still for a few moments and he could hear the wind move through the trees and the faint sound of the pony breathing. Even the snow seemed to stop coming down then, but then things had began to start again. He could remember the sharp pain as it flew down his body and the cold air as it bit through his jacket. He had been lucky then, and he had been lucky when he had re-injured it too. Could he really be lucky a third time? Or would he actually have to have surgery on his leg now.

Sam nodded to acknowledge what he said. She slowly rose with him. She gingerly put an arm around him to try to help support him. It was a bit awkward, yes, but she didn't think he could make it to a barn or even the truck where she could take him to the hospital. She didn't know how bad the injuries were though. They seemed bad, but I was never good at trying to figure out the extent of injuries so I would let him chose if he needed the hospital or just a rest in the barn on some hay. She watched him from the corner of a dark brown eye, waiting to see what he may do. Why did she ever talk to this boy before? He never came up to her before and he normally kept his distance from her. She would always dismiss it and just ignore it and think he was just shy like herself. Her lips remained sealed, waiting to see what he wanted to do. Sam was sure she could make him listen to me since he seemed weak enough to just push him over if he objected.

He felt her wrap an arm around him and tensed up for a fraction of a second before once again relaxing. She wasn't going to hurt him but that was the same reaction most people got when the unexpectedly put an arm around him. He somehow managed to take one step but it was an awkward one since he was trying to keep as much weight off of his right leg as he could. This wasn't going to work at all there was no way he could make it anywhere the way he was going. He might as well get back on the ground and try and crawl somewhere since walking was at a pace slower than that or a turtles. "This isn't going to work." He whispered before the pain overtook him and he was silent. Never in his life would he have guessed that so much pain could be done by one person. A small shiver ran down his spine as the cold rain continued to hit him. Everything had just went wrong today, Calvin showing up, the rain, nobody being around, if only something had went right.
It was then that he heard a door shut and thought he had just imagined it. Yet something told him to look behind him so he slowly turned his head and a small smile appeared on his face at the person he was seeing running up to them. One would wonder how he could even smile at a time like this but the answer was making their way toward him. "Brian" He quietly said before the very person he spoke of slid to a stop next to them. He knew that Brian would make him go to the hospital but he'd be more willing to now that he had him with. He knew that there probably was a lot of damage done to his body but the thought of having strange people poke at him had never been one of his favorite thoughts. The last time he'd been in a hospital had been about five years ago when his leg had literally given out, sending him down a hillside. That was back when he had still been with the people who had been labeled abusive by him.
"What happened, and why is Sam here? Actually, it's a good thing that I forgot my laptop and was only about twenty miles out of town before I remembered. I was in town tying up some business matters." He said before looking and before looking down at Rocky, he could tell that something serious had went on and that somebody had hurt Rocky but that was about it. It was then that his eyes traveled down to Rocky's right leg which was being held off of the ground. A sudden fear rose inside of him, if something had happened to that leg then it certainly would lead to a lot more pain for Rocky. He watched as a tear slid down his grooms face and he knew that something was really wrong of course that was true. "You're alright, nobody's going to hurt you again. Come on let's get you back to my truck and out of the rain." He said before taking his jacket off and handing it to Rocky who to his amazement, put it own without any help but it took about ten times longer than it would a normal person. He knew that Rocky probably was freezing and his cloths were soaked he just hoped that he would be ok, with time.
((Ack I have to go I've been on for about 15 minutes longer than I was supposed to be.))

((Sorry I didn't post yesterday lol I was tired last night and was completely out of muse... Now I have very little muse lol))
Sam watched as Brian ran up. She moved her arm away so he could put on the jacket. Though it took awhile. About 10 minutes longer then a normal person Sam would guess. The former jockey simply watched, her brown eyes switching from Brian to the boy. She still hadn't heard his name yet. She shifted her weight, rather uncomfortably. She wanted to fade into the background again. Maybe she could after the Brain took the boy to the hospital. The hair along her arms stood up, as if it was protesting against the cold rain that ran down her arms. Two brown eyes glanced up at the darkened sky, wondering when the downpour would end, before they had to look back down when a rain drop landed close to one of them, almost on the eye. She blinked back the rain that ran down her face, though her hair held some of it back. She shifted again, unnoticeably. She hoped that after this drama it would be done and over with and she could go back to her normal life. Though her life probably won't ever be normal. No one's life could be "normal" like in the movies. But at least to the way things use to be like.

Rocky shifted his weight to his right leg for a fraction of a second before quickly shifting it back to his left leg again. Something was really wrong and judging by the amount of pain that he had just felt and was still feeling he'd hurt his leg near where the most serious break had been before. He looked over at Brian and then over to Sam for a moment before his eyes moved back over to Brian. There was no way he'd be able to stay on his feet for much long, his left leg was really starting to hurt now too. "My leg hurts." He said quietly and then felt Brian's arm wrap around him. Right now he just wanted to curl up in a little ball and forget that all of this was happening. It was just like that last time he'd hurt his leg but this time there was actually people by his side. It made him feel better but he still was scared and afraid of what would happen to him at the hospital.
"I know it does, so at the count of three I'm going to pick you up alright. One..two..three." He said and then gently picked Rocky up and felt him shift in his arms slightly before resting his head against his shoulder. He looked down at him and noticed how he just seemed to lay there and be still. He knew that if any other person had been through what he had then they would be complaining. Rocky had a special place in his heart and he really was a role model for others in his mind. "You'll be ok Rocky, just relax I'm not leaving you." He said quietly and then realized that he probably would need Sam to accompany them to the hospital. Since he was fairly sure that Rocky wouldn't want him to put him down once they were inside of his truck. The keys were still in it and he was pretty sure that he had left it running. Once he had seen Rocky and Sam he'd basically just took off toward where they were. "I hope that you don't mind Sam but I have a feeling that you'll have to drive to the hospital the keys are still in my truck and it's still running." He said before looking back at Rocky again.
Now that he was safe and sound in Brian's arms he knew that things would finally be fine. He heard him ask Sam to drive them to the hospital but he wasn't really paying attention. The pain had intensified once he had shifted his weight to his right leg for that fraction of a second. He knew that he shouldn't have done it but it had just been a habit. "I'm sorry," he whispered before a tiny tear ran down his face. "I was just so scared that I didn't try and run away." He said before burying his face into Brian's shoulder.

Sam glanced out at the road. Rain still poured heavily. Though a normal person's eyes you could probably see the paint on the road. Sam could barely see the outline of it. She cursed her eyes silently. Her gaze stayed on the road before the flickered back to Brian. I-I can't, she stuttered out, her eyes flickering out at the road again. She hoped, and prayed, he wouldn't ask any questions. Sam didn't like talking about her odd eyes. She didn't want to tell anyone. She rather keep it a secret for as long as she could. She didn't want to seem weak. It was almost like an natural instinct to her. Like a rabbit hiding any illness so no predators will pick them off. She knew that no one would harm her because of it but she still didn't want others to know. It was as if she was ashamed of her own two eyes. Of how weak and helpless they sometimes made her feel in darkness when a normal person's eyes could pierce though the darkness confidently.

She couldn't, well then it would be very had for him to even get to the hospital. Of course, it would be hard to anyway since there was a rather heavy rain coming down and he knew that they simply couldn't stay outside any longer. "Alright, well I guess that we'd better be going then." He said and then began to make his way off toward his truck as he tried to hold Rocky without him getting bounced around. He could feel Rocky shivering still and once they were safe inside of his truck he'd crank the heat up for him and probably set him in the backseat with another blanket around him. He knew that Calvin could be around the property and didn't like the idea of him being there alone with the horses yet he had to get Rocky to the hospital. He probably would call one of the neighbors up and ask them to check around the property for anybody who wasn't supposed to be there. He knew that somebody would be able to do that for him.
Rocky looked back as Brian walked and noticed that Sam didn't seem like she was going with them. "Don't go," he suddenly said and knew that Sam would be able to hear him. He didn't know why he didn't want her to go he was really confused at the moment and scared. Yet he knew that he was safe now that Brian was there but for some reason he had grown attached to Sam. Maybe it was because she hadn't turned away when he had needed help. Something was telling him that there was a reason why she didn't want to drive at night be he knew that he shouldn't ask. After all he didn't like people asking about his limp and he didn't like to talk about it in front of people who he didn't know. Actually he didn't really like to speak about it in front of Brian either.
Rocky wanted Sam to come with them? That was odd and he wondered why that was. "Rocky, I'm sure that Sam has other things that she has to do." He said softly and then took a few more steps forward he just wanted to get Rocky into his truck and if Sam wanted to come with them then she was more than welcome to.

((Better then mine lol))
Sam's brown eyed gaze glanced inside the barn. Every other heartbeat her eyes would have to blink the rain water out of her eyes. Her curious peeked at what may be inside the barn. Her two eyes slowly trailed over everything, hoping she could catch a sight of what or who did this to the boy. She still hadn't caught his name yet. She flinched and froze mentally at the sound of his voice. Brown eyes stayed glued inside for a few more heartbeats before they turned to watch the boy and Brain. Sam hesitated before she took a few jogging steps after them, making puddles of muddy rain water splash up and soak her jean legs, before she slowed to Brain's pace when she neared the duo. Sam glanced at the boy in Brian's arm. She was curious to know if they were related or just close friends. Her gaze went to the truck, trying to blink the rain out of her view. Sam hopped that they would be angry with her for not wanting to drive. If she did drive then they would all be in danger of dieing, instead of one just being injured. She almost dared herself to glance at the boy again but stopped herself and kept her eyes on the truck, still blinking rain drops away from her brown eyes.

Rocky looked back once he heard footsteps, at first he thought that it was Calvin sneaking up on him but once again he realized that the footsteps were not his. They were lighter and it was then that he realized that Sam was in fact, following them. Once she caught up he noticed how she looked at him for a moment before looking at the truck. It was then when he once again buried his face into Brian's shoulder and closed his eyes, he was growing tired and he knew it was probably from the cold. Yet they were almost to the truck so very soon he'd be safe and sound in the warmth once again. For some reason this reminded him of a few weeks ago when he'd dragged himself over to Brian's barn at the track and asked him if he was looking for staff. That was all he had said and a few moments later Brian was carrying him off to his truck. He'd fallen asleep on the ride to the farm and for about a week he hadn't really gotten out of bed due to the flu. He was glad that Brian always seemed to be there when he needed him.
He noticed the way Rocky looked back to make sure that Sam was following him. He felt him bury his face into his shoulder and looked down at him and noticed that his eyes were closed. "You'll be alright Rocky, just you wait everything will be fine in the end." He whispered before stopping at his truck and somehow managing to get the door open. It was then that he set Rocky in the backseat and heard him gasp once again before tensing up. He could only guess that a new wave of pain had hit him from moving. He felt really bad for him, Rocky didn't deserve any of this he'd never done anything to anybody. Hadn't Rocky went through enough pain for one person he didn't deserve to be kicked again. He picked a blanket up from the passengers seat and covered Rocky up with it. Then he shut the door and moved over to the drivers side.
It was times like this when he was glad that his truck actually had a back seat. Sam would end up riding in the passengers seat while Rocky had the whole backseat to himself but he knew that he probably wouldn't move during the whole ride to the hospital. He turned the heat up before looking down at the floor of his truck he spotted what he was looking for, it was a slightly worn out sweatshirt that had been on the floor for a few weeks now. If Sam was cold she was welcome to have it, and then after she was done with it she could throw it out. Since it had seen better days. He then turned the windshield wipers on and prepared for the long drive to the hospital in the rain. He wasn't mad at Sam for not wanting to drive, maybe it was for the best since he was used to his truck and she wasn't.

Sam watched as Brain put the boy inside before he started to get into the truck. She quickly went to the passenger side. Opening the door she climbs in, closing it behind her. Automatically her hand went behind her to grab the seat belt before she buckled it. She gave a small glance back at the boy, who had a blanket on she noticed in the dim light. Shouldn't we strap him in a bit? She asked her gaze glancing back to Brain. So he won't fall forwards when you stop, she said her brown eyed gaze staring almost blindly at him. She cursed these eyes of her's. She could barely see now.

He listened to Sam's question, he had considered doing that for two reasons. One, it would be very hard to do by the way Rocky was laying now. Two, he was slightly afraid that by doing that he'd bump Rocky and somehow hurt him more. "He'll be alright, we're not going to go very fast since it's a little hard to see." He said and then looked back at Rocky, he could tell that his eyes were closed but he had somehow managed to move further down into the blanket. After looking at him for a few moments more he put his seatbelt on before slowly backing the truck up. Soon they were going down the driveway and his eyes were on the road and nothing else. Once they got to then end though he looked over at Sam, once they got to the hospital he'd have to tell her all that had happened to Rocky. After all, it probably would help her understand him if she heard what he'd been thorough before he had started to work at the farm.
"Once we get to the hospital, I probably should tell you all of what's happened to him. Believe me, his life before he started to work for me wasn't pretty." He said softly, yet he knew that Rocky was probably half asleep anyway. After saying that he thought back to what Rocky had told him about his past. He couldn't imagine what it was like to grow up without ever knowing your parents and being shuffled from foster home to foster home. Then when you finally thought you'd found a place where you'll actually stay, being abused. He could tell how hurt Rocky had been by the way his voice changed. Rocky's voice was naturally soft, or that was what he thought or liked to think. But when he had started to tell him about what had happened to him his voice just seemed to fade and it had been very hard to hear him. After hearing what he'd been thought it had made him wonder if that was the reason why his voice was so quiet.
It was then that he remembered the sweatshirt. He picked it up and held it out to Sam. "If you're cold feel free to use this. Afterwords you can throw it out it's a little worn out and has seen better days. It's probably going to be a little big, wait rephrase that. I know it's going to be big on you since you're probably six inches shorter than I am." He said before looking out at the road again. He set the sweatshirt down in between them and pulled out onto the highway and began to slowly drive down the road.
