Ty's eyes followed Robin's hand for a moment and he looked up at her when she put her hand over his. He listened to what she had to say and let her finish. Once she did, Ty offered her a small, genuine smile. "You're welcome, Robin," he replied. "I know that it's hard to fit in to a new place." He then paused for a moment and looked around them. He leaned forward, for sake of not insulting anyone. "Anyway," he continued, grinning now, "if you were working at Burger King, I'd come in and make you work for me, whether or not you wanted to." He then leaned back and gave a laugh.
He relaxed in his chair and looked around again. "I think you'll fit in just fine here," he confided in her, looking at her with his deep brown eyes as he finished his sentence. He grabbed his iced coffee and took a sip through the straw. "You have a likable attitude and personality." He smiled at her once again.

She smiled, but some sadness still remained. "Thanks. I'm not sure other people think the same thing," she said, making a face. "I tend to be withdrawn, but eh, you seemed to have caught me on a good day. On a normal day I wouldn't have said anything at all. I would've just sat there, thinking sadly about my mother, how my father couldn't even support his family when my mother was alive, how I didn't know anyone and I didn't even want to move. I mean, I yelled some things at my father I regret. And now he barely talks. He sits at the bar, drinking his beer and talking to the bar tender. Occasionally he might come out of the reverie to wish me good look riding Al, or something like that, but he lives in a daze. The way I see it, sure, sure maybe were not, not the luckiest family but we've got a roof over our heads, and food on our plates and I think that should be enough. I mean, what more is there to ask for? Who the hell are we supposed to ask?"
Her voice had risen so it was unnaturally high, and though she had attempted to blink salty tears away furiously, she felt them fill her eyes, and angerly swallowed the lump in her throat. She cradled her head in her hands, waiting for the sudden rush of emotions to pass.

Ty listened to Robin, wincing every time her voice became higher. He wasn't embarrassed for himself, but for Robin. He knew how scary and not cool it was to lose yourself in public. He waited for Robin to stop talking before he said lightly, "It's okay...." But, when Robin cradled her head in her hands, it was too much for him. He got up from his seat and walked toward her. He bent down and scooted her chair, so that she was facing him. He then stood up slightly and wrapped his arms around her body, tucking her close into his body.
"It's not your fault, Robin," he said gently. "Don't beat yourself up." He smoothed his hand over her hair, trying to comfort her. "You can cry, you know. I won't think any less of you. You gotta let emotions out, hon." He then let go of her and squatted down in front of her, feeling the eyes of people on them. Ty removed her hands from her head, put his rough index finger under her chin and tilted her head up. "It'll all be okay. I gotch'your back." He then wrapped his arms around her once more.

Robin's sobs subsided, and she leaned against Ty, drawing comfort from his body heat. She closed her eyes, feeling tears leak out, feeling the stares of people on her. She didn't care. She had someone who didn't run from her when she needed them most. Someone who wasn't afraid of her sudden spurts of anguish for her mother. She tried to recover her voice, brushing tears out of her eyes, and sniffling slightly. She inhaled, closing her eyes, and breathing slowly and deeply.
Finally, she took her head from Ty's muscular chest, face tear stained, eyes washed with brightness. "Thanks Ty," she said, sniffling. Her voice still shook, as she pried her wet hair from her face. "Oh, I'm so sorry, I don't know why I broke down like this," she said, still breathing slowly as if to steady yourself. She laughed shakily, continuing to whip her eyes.

Ty smirked at her as she tried to whip her wet hairs from her face. He reached up and moved them from her face, dropping them behind her shoulder. "It's okay," he told her again. "Don't worry about it. Really." He still stayed bent in front of her, telling himself that he wouldn't move until she was okay to... well, stand on her own, if you will.
"My mother was all about family and stuff like that," he began to explain to her. "There were 4 girls in my family when I was growing up. So there was a lot of estrogen and crying - not saying that all girls cry. Anyway... my mother was certain that us men - there was 3 of us - were too hardy and needed to get in touch with ourselves." He paused, thinking about his mother back in Australia. He missed her a lot. "She was the one who taught all of us - even my dad - that we needed to show our emotions. And that, despite what society and TV says, it's okay for guys to cry, too."
Ty's mind once again drifted to his mother. She only had two kids left with her at home, both girls. He was sure that his father was drinking them out of house and home, but he knew that somehow... her mother was happy and loved her life. Ty looked Robin in the eyes. "I don't know why I told you that," he said, "but I did."

Robin smiled, a small, sad smile. She was sure he could see every tear clinging onto her long eyelashes. Every blemish on her pale face. Somehow, she didn't shrink back , uncomfortable, but nodded, slowly, understanding completely what he said. Then she swept forward and kissed him. She didn't know how it happened, why, but all she felt was the sensation of her lips against his, the feeling of being so close to a fellow human being.

Ty was slightly caught off guard when Robin suddenly pressed her lips against his. He kept his eyes open for a moment and then slowly closed them, leaning into Robin's kiss. He savored the taste of her, hoping that once they pulled apart, she would stay with him and not turn to run.

[ooc: yea, i think muse hates kissing]
She broke apart, a slightly surprised look on her face, more of her own behavior than anything else. "Wow," she said, eyes wide. She was aware of the eyes of perhaps several dozen people, both passing by and inside the coffee shop, and more than anything she wanted to tell them to mind their own business, but she pushed the urge down and stared at Ty, unsure what had just happened.
She sipped her ice coffee, the sound of the ice bumping against the plastic breaking the sudden silence that had fallen between them. She looked awkwardly down, as if she had dropped something, but when she looked up again she was smiling, almost guiltily. "Well, that was a bit of a surprise eh?" she said, with a laugh.

Ty smiled at her, his eyes open now, as she pulled away from him.
Wow is right, he thought. He got up and walked around to his side of the table, ignoring the cool stares of everyone around them. He took his seat and looked across the table at Robin, feeling slightly unmanly that she had made the first move. But, she needed to do it more than he needed it. Plus, he would have never made a move on any woman in the state that Robin had been in - and still might be in.
"Yes, a surprise," Ty said as he listened to the ice in her coffee slosh around. He took his plastic cup and took a swig of his coffee. He placed it back down and looked Robin in the eyes, his brown eyes bearing into hers. "It was a nice surprise, though." He smiled.

She nodded, still smiling, though most of the guilt was gone from it. She bit her lip. "I thought that was the last thing I needed right then, but I guess I was wrong," she said, her grin now of genuine happiness. The only telltale sign of her previous breakdown was the tear washed brightness of her eyes, and the remaining rosy parts of her face. She played with her straw, listening to the ice crunch around. Somehow it soothed her. Did it remind her of ice fishing as a child perhaps? The chill of the brisk wind against her face, the satisfying crunch when a the rod finally punctured the hard ice?
Perhaps. Though Robin didn't willfully invite this digression into her mind, instead of pushing it away, she focused on it, a thoughtful look appearing on her face. "What makes us the people we are today?" she asked, quietly, almost to herself.

"Life is full of surprises," Ty told her. He leaned back in his chair, looking around the town. It was a nice spring day outside; the air was warm, the breeze was low and soft, and the sun was shining. He closed his eyes for a moment as the breeze lifted up and swept over him, wedging its way underneath his hair and picking it up. He opened his eyes, remembering Australia. The breeze, despite the weather, was always warm and the sand during the summer was always just right. He remembered once, right before he left Oz, he rented a horse for a day and took him on the beach, galloping through the ocean spray and kicking up the sand as they moved down the beach.
He heard Robin mumble something, jerking him out of his memories. "What was that?" he asked smoothly and softly.

She shook her head, as if it didn't matter, but posed the question again, "What makes us the people we are? Why do we make the choices we do? What causes some people to be luckier than others?"
She hadn't really meant to speak of such philosophical subjects as "the meaning of life," she thought, smiling to herself. It was one of the few similarities she had to her father. The two very rarely spoke, but even so, when they did they spoke of hypothetical situations, and deep things to which there was no neccesarily wrong answer. She tended to tone down these conversations, but somehow it felt right to discuss such "big" topics with Ty.
She shut up her sudden stream of thoughts quickly, and waited attentively for his answer.

Ty listened carefully to Robin's words, playing them over and over in his head. He, himself, had never really taken the time to think about questions like that. He used to think that money bought happiness and got people to places, but he realized he was wrong down the line.
"I'm not really sure," he admitted. "I suppose... we're who we are because of the choices we make. And that then either makes us lucky or not; I guess it depends if we work at it." He thought about this, but then shook his head.
"I don't know, Robin," he said again. He looked at her, focusing in on her pretty face. "What do you think?"

She paused for a moment, blue eyes suspended in a thoughtful expression. When she spoke it was obvious she was putting great thought into her words, and she hesitated between them. "I think... I think that we have to fight for what we want. Nobody gets lucky in life. Some people have more drive than others. And maybe my family didn't have so much. But I do. I can make things happen. Me and Al."
The thoughtful look was replaced with a blazing expression of hard determination mingled with independence and the desire to succeed. "Maybe I'm not stoic. Maybe I'm not rich, or beautiful, or with a nice horse or anything like that. But I have something other people don't. I want to win. Life is a battle, perhaps a gorey one, but I can get through it. I have to."
She tried not to harden her expression to a grimace of determination, but she knew her expression was calculating and somewhat gruff. She shrugged, seeming to suddenly doubt herself. "I mean, I dunno..."

Ty smiled as she spoke, loving the way her voice sounded and loving how she almost argued with herself. He waited until she was completely done talking before he studied her for a moment and then reached over to place his hand on top of her hand.
"No one ever said that you couldn't make things happen," he told her. "And you're right: some do have more drive than others. But, I do believe that some people get lucky in life. If someone buys a lotto ticket and wins 1 million every year for life, that's luck to me. They didn't really have to fight to win it, did they? They just said, 'Hey! I feel like getting a lotto ticket today. Gimme a $20.'" He paused for a moment, letting his words settle in and wondering if she was going to get mad at him.
"Being rich shouldn't matter," he finally said. "Sure, it's nice to have some extra money every month. But, I think that if you're happy - with yourself, your life, your choices - then things are probably better than having money. And you are beautiful." He smiled, hoping to cheer her up if she was feeling down. "Life is all about the choices we make. Don't doubt yourself."
