Plot/Purpose
In the summer of 1954, all is well in Honey Grove. Every lawn has been cut to an exact height, every garden weeded and beautiful, every house cleaned and spotless. Husbands come home to their families every evening at five o' clock in which they immediately sit down and enjoy their evening meal. Children go to school and get along with their classmates. It seems that Honey Grove has reached the peak of the "American Dream".
Is this perfection just an illusion, or is it really happening in this small American town?
On the evening of July 1st, 1954, something disturbs the silent peace in Honey Grove. A huge asteroid falls from the sky and lands in the city park. Surprisingly, the city doesn't take on any damage, except for the park now has a huge crater-like hole in its center, the asteroid burried deeply into the cement below the park's foundation.
Citizens who are aware of the fallen asteroid immediately rush out to investigate the phenomenon, completely unaware of the dangers that such a foreign object could instigate. Police come to the scene and put their famous yellow tape around the area and try and caution the curious citizens of Honey Grove, but to no avail.
The fallen asteroid makes the news and puts Honey Grove on the map. Thousands flock to the city to "view" the asteroid that has landed there.
Pretty soon after the landing of the asteroid some of the citizens of Honey Grove begin to show signs of sickness. The medical staff at the hospital classify it as a "flu bug" and treat the patients as such. However, the medication seems to have no effect. As a result, the patients die which begins to scare the citizens of Honey Grove. Afterall, nothing like this has ever happened before.
Rumors of an epidemic begin to spread, and fear grips the city. People stay at home and barricade themselves in, thinking that it will prevent them from catching 'the disease'. The hospital has become quarantined. Only those infected with the disease are permitted entrance.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Honey Grove has requested assistance from the National Guard, who turn the city into a military-based society. Strict curfews force the citizens of Honey Grove to return home before dark, no one goes near the hospital. The entire park has been gated off in an effort to keep people away from the asteroid.
The once beautiful and perfect Honey Grove has become a city of fear and sickness. The people are too scared and sick to realize that the asteroid is the cause of the disease; its gaseous fumes continue to infiltrate the city, causing this epidemic.
